The home was built in 1909.  It was designed by architect Frederick C. German for Dr. Dana and Elizabeth Rood and their family.  F.C. German was a prominent architect in Duluth. German and his partners designed several churches, notable city buildings and other grand east end homes.  For more information on F.C. German go to www.zenithcity.com

The Duluth East End House Survey conducted in 2007 by Larson-Fisher Associates on behalf of the City of Duluth’s Heritage Preservation Commission indicates the architects were George and William Smith & Emerson Vokes.  We have the original blueprints and F.C. German was the architect.

We do not have a lot of information regarding the Roods.  We do know they were both from Michigan. Dana Rood was born in 1864 and Elizabeth Rood was born in 1873. Dr. Rood went to medical school in Michigan.  In the 1920’s Dr. Rood started a hospital in Hibbing, MN.

Interesting Tidbits:

  • The home originally had a pool.  It was filled in during 1993, according to City of Duluth Records.
  • The home originally had four working fireplaces.  The master bedroom fireplace was walled in at some point.
